I'm almost 55 in just a couple days.

This is the time of life when my mother died. It was so long ago, my 25 year old daughter was still a baby, my son not even born. She missed everything.

In my 50’s, I’m usually thinking about the future, not so sad about the past. I’ve aged past being someone’s child. I think of my mom only occasionally, little reminders of her touching my heart, not slicing into it like when I was younger.

I’m feeling for her loss. Turning 55, around the age when she died, I feel like I'm just getting started, again. It’s intimidating and exciting, unavoidable. On top of that, I’ve already done so much, raised kids, got divorced and remarried, launched kids, menopause, ran businesses.

The time and environment when my mom grew up placed low expectations on women. Her poor health and shortened life span reflect the consequences. At this age herself, she was just getting started, right before she died. I wish she could have had more ❤️and I really appreciate that she was my mom.

The momma bird on my porch behaves like her chicks are important, coyly acting like her nest isn’t right above our coffee drinking spot. But, unlike myself, she’s not processing her role, reviewing her performance, cycling through guilt and pride.

Thinking about our importance is an element that distinguishes us humans from our animal friends.

Starting a business, working for a promotion, wanting fame, parenting a child, hacking a system, even trying to meditate your way into enlightenment are ways you project yourself into a life.

Thinking about what you’re doing, why, and how you feel about it creates your own sense of importance.
