Identify and understand complex PTSD.
Clients seek professional help because they have felt loss and rejection. Coming into a clinical setting, their fear that “I won’t be understood,” deserves an immediate, clear response. Professionals need to, in fact, understand.
Assess a client’s underlying chronic and acute issues, not just symptoms, asking yourself, “Am I interested?” “Am I qualified?”
Understanding yourself helps you identify other’s defenses. Being able to create a solid working hypothesis and propose a strategy invites the client to conclude, “I feel respected, so I trust you to work on deeper issues.”
